“Trekkies” try to break world record

Riverside, Iowa could soon be known for more than being the self-proclaimed future birthplace of fictional character Captain James T. Kirk of USS Enterprise and Star Trek fame. The city could hold a record in the Guinness Book of World Records.

On Saturday, Star Trek fanatics from across the nation gathered for the 26th Annual Trek Fest. This year’s goal was to break the world record for, “Largest gathering of people dressed as Star Trek characters.” The original record was set in London, at Millennium Bridge, back in February with ninety-nine, “trekkies” or Star Trek fanatics in attendance.

“If London can do it so can we,” said one fully dressed fan from the crowd.

Even the eighty degree weather did not stop these true fans from attending the event in full attire. Organizer of the event, Fred Monfeli said, “You’ve heard the phrase ‘you don’t have to be crazy to do this job but it helps.’ Well, you don’t necessarily have to be crazy to be a Star Trek fan, but it doesn’t hurt that either.”

All participants had to be in full costume in order to be counted. There were a few people that were partly dressed up that did not make the cut. The crowd was led into an empty tennis court in groups of twenty-five to make the counting process a little easier.

“We got photos, video, it is all documented,” said Monfeli.

Although there was no Guinness representative or official at the event, the number that will be sent to Guinness will be 153, which will break the record set in London, but it will not be official for four to six weeks.

Panera Planning To Add More Pay-What-You-Can-Afford Restaurants

A month ago, Panera Bread Co. opened its first non-profit, pay-what-you-can-afford eatery, called the Saint Louis Bread Company Cares Café, in Clayton, MO. And the restaurant chain's chairman is so happy with the results, the company plans to launch two more in the coming months.

"I guess I would say it's performing better than we even might have hoped in our cynical moments, and it's living up to our best sense of humanity," Panera chairman Ron Shaich said of the experiment.

The restaurant's cashiers tell customers the suggested price of their orders and then the customers decide how much to pay. According to Shaich, between 60-70% pay the menu price. Around 15% dig into their pockets to pay a little more, while the other 15% or so pay less or even walk out paying nothing.

The restaurant, which features the same menu as Panera but is technically run by a non-profit organization called Panera Cares, took in $100,000 in revenue its first month. Panera supports the non-profit but is not on the hook financially if the pay-what-you-want restaurants fail.

Shaich didn't say where the non-profit's new locations would be. But a rep for Panera said they are looking for areas that will continue to attract an upscale diner, but is accessible to lower-income communities.

The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists says Wilson is the first person in his profession to find and report money in dog poop.

Black Widow Spider Found In Whole Foods Grapes

A man says he found a black widow spider in a bag of grapes bought at the Whole Foods Market on Washington Street in Brighton.

Jorge Fuertes told WBZ he reached into the bag, pulled out some grapes and saw something black fall out and run away. He thought it was an ant. So, he looked in the bag and found a southern black widow spider.

"It was just sitting on a stem," said Fuertes. He spit out his mouthful of grapes and noticed the spider's telltale red hourglass on its belly.

"That's when I kind of went into the bag and that's when I seen the red and the designs on the back of the spider and I said 'Oh, let me just put this one away.'"

He put it in a yogurt cup and went back to the store to let them know what happened. A manager told Fuertes the entire shipment of Anthony's brand organic red seedless grapes would be removed from the shelves.

In a statement to WBZ, Whole Foods said spiders are part of the landscape at their California grower and "although we are very cautious when unpacking produce, sometimes insects are not detected."

Fuertes said Whole Foods offered him gift cards if he'd leave the spider with them. But, he wants to keep it, at least for now. "I could have taken a nice bite into him, ate all of that venom, but hey, didn't happen," he said.

A black widow bite is rarely deadly, but its neurotoxic venom is painful. It can bring on muscle cramps, vomiting, and dizziness, especially in young children and the elderly.

Of the spiders and insects found in produce, the black widow is one of the most common. People are finding them more often because growers are using less-toxic pesticides.
